Willis Johnson – Black Inventor

For many people, there is nothing better than baking and enjoying delicious treats. There is a large amount of highly specialized equipment involved in any confectionary art, as any avid baker will tell you, and the reason for this is that baking actually requires a substantial amount of physical effort. Without these niche inventions, there would be substantial time and energy wasted, and if you are cooking for business purposes, then this is a waste of potential earning power. Various inventions have helped to ease this strain, and one that really boosted productivity is the egg beater designed and patented by Willis Johnson in 1884.

The concept is fairly simple. Two separate containers were located between rotating whisks. Individual handles could then be rotated to mix, beat, or fold various foods. For example, eggs could be placed in one container, while dough was turned in the other. You could also use both for eggs, or use one container as the other was cleaned. Although the design is simple, the fact that there were two containers that could be worked independently meant that productivity was boosted exponentially. Finally bakers could meet demand, and budding home confectioners would not have to spend ages working on minimal product.

While the design has been improved over the years, and reworked to the point where we have electronic beaters and whisks, the basic concept really has not changed in over 120 years. While there is still a simple pleasure in doing everything by hand, when it comes down to efficiency and productivity, the dual container egg beater design by Willis Johnson is a pioneering invention that has stood the test of time Like all true inventions, it is timeless, simple, and effective. So next time you bite into a delicious cake, spare a thought for the talent of Willis Johnson.
