Valerie Thomas

Valerie Thomas is one of the black women who had been always obsessed with technology ever since she was a small child. Her father also had the passion of experimenting with different electronics and even had written some books about it for teenage boys. So, there is no surprise that Valerie developed the interest in technology that she did. However, when Valerie was in school it did not seem as though pursuing a career in the science field would be something that would ever become a reality due to the fact that the all-girls school that she attended did not encourage her to pursue her dreams. But, Valerie did not let any of this get her down of discourage her. In fact, once she graduated high school she was even more determined to become a scientist.

After graduating Valerie Thomas enrolled into Morgan State University. There she was a great student and she and one other female student were able to leave with a degree in physics. Not to mention the fact that after she graduated she was able to start a job working as a data analyst for NASA. Once she had proven herself to be an asset for the team she was then moved up to be the manager for the Landsat project.

In October 1980 Valerie Thomas was awarded her first patent. Her invention idea came about back in 1977 when she first began to experiment with flat and concave mirrors. Her invention was similar to some of the other mirrors that had already been invented yet the difference came in because her invention – Illusion Transmitter – allowed three dimensional illusions to take place in real life.

Valerie Thomas is the perfect example for youth today when it comes to showing them that determination and persistence can take you a long way.
