Sarah Goode

People in privileged positions often take the smallest of life’s luxuries for granted, such as having your own space and a warm bed to sleep in. People have often fought to bring this standard of living to the impoverished masses, and one such campaigner was Sarah Goode, the first African American woman to receive a patent. Although there is very little known about the life of this tremendous woman, her inventive creativity and will to help others is legendary, as is her contribution to the abolition and women’s rights movements.

Sarah Goode lived a humble life. She was born in 1850, and spent most of her days as a slave. This would have meant that she received very little education, and opportunities for self-betterment were few and far between. One opportunity which she grabbed with both hands came with the end of the American Civil War. This time of turmoil gave her a chance to escape her bondage, although records are not clear on whether she was free or not. Regardless of this omission, we do know that she opened a furniture store in Chicago soon after, and it was here that she was struck by her most famous idea.

With all of the people looking for refuge during the war, space had become incredibly rare. Even if you were lucky enough to have a space, the chances are that you would not be able to fit all of your positions into your room. Goode pioneered the notion of multi-purpose furniture by patenting a cabinet bed, which is best thought of as a kind of precursor to a sleeper couch. This genius design featured a cabinet that served as a storage space or work station, which could be manipulated to serve as a bed. This meant that you could work and sleep in a smaller space, even at the office, which saved both space and time. It is the kind of invention that gave people their autonomy back, providing new opportunities even to the poorest people, and Goode is clearly a worthy recipient of her life-changing patent.
