Robert Pelham – Black Inventor

Robert Pelham is one of the black inventors who was born in Petersburg, Virginia in 1859. However, when the children were young Robert’s parents decided it would be best for the family to move to Michigan so they would have a chance of receiving a better education. They felt as though the better education the children received the better a chance they would have a securing a decent job.

While Robert Pelham was still in public school he took on a job at the Daily Post while working there he also had the pleasure of being trained to work in the journalism niche as well. Robert stuck with this job for 20 years even though he also managed one of the black newspapers by the name of the Detroit Plaindealer as well.

As the years continued to pass by Robert Pelham explored a variety of different jobs. He even married in 1893 and then decided that he wanted to move to Washington, D.C. Once in Washington D.C. Pelham was able to secure a job at the United States Census department with the job title of being a clerk. However, while working, Pelham also pursued a law degree at Howard.

While working at the Census as a clerk Robert Pelham felt as though the job he was doing could be a whole lot easier which inspired him to create an invention. His invention was made to help make the pasting process easier and less messy. Once the apparatus was created he was able to help the Census save over 3,000 and they were very grateful. Also, while Robert Pelham worked for 30 years with the Census he was able to come up with two other inventions which he patented and helped save the Census even more money and build his success at the same time.
