Philip Emeagwali

Even in the world of supercomputers, engineering and academia, there is conspiracy and drama that seems to follow industry leaders. Philip Emeagwali is such an individual, a brilliant mind that overcame diversity who has been both lauded and loathed by the international community. Regardless of what his naysayers think about him, it is evident that he is a true genius, and that without him, the world as we know it would be considerably different to what it is now.

The life of Emeagwali reads like a Hollywood novel.  He was born in Nigeria, but his upbringing was shattered by civil war, during which he served as a child soldier. Once a safe level of peace took over, he did an equivalency test so that he could further his education. He was lucky enough to be the recipient of a scholarship offered by the University of London, and soon found himself studying in America. The whirlwind rise to stardom soon saw him winning awards for his incredible work with super computers, particularly those that are now used across the world for the analysis of oil. A scientific contribution linked to the world’s most precious substance soon saw Emeagwali become a household name.

But as with so many celebrities, society did not really understand all of the work done by Emeagwali, and it did not take long before the rumours began to spread. The first is that he is the father of the internet, which is a tremendous title, but one that is not supported by patents or similar evidence, and given the likelihood of early military prototypes, such a nickname is probably misplaced. The second area of debate came with his doctorate, which was not approved by the correct bodies and was rendered invalid.

Regardless of the controversy surrounding his work, Philip Emeagwali is a hero in his home country, and has forever altered the world of computers, and has more than earned his title as one of the most important African Americans of all time.
