Percy Julian – Black Inventor

Percy Julian was one of the black inventors who were born in Alabama in 1899. He had five siblings and his mother worked as a school teacher while he father worked as a railroad mail clerk. All of the children were successful with the boys becoming physicians and the girls obtaining their masters. Then, of course there was Percy who turned out to be the most successful child of all.

Throughout Percy’s entire school career he was a very successful student. In fact in 1920 when he graduated from college he was the class valedictorian. He wanted to go to graduate school but because of his race he felt that it would be a wiser decision to take the advice of his advisor and settle for a job as a chemistry teacher. However, a few years later he was able to do some graduate work and he proved that he was more than ready by completing all of his classes with straight “A”’s. Not to mention the fact by 1923 he obtained his master’s degree. However, even though he had accomplished so much in such a short amount of time Percy was still unable to get the teaching position that he desired because the school system felt that white children would refuse to take his class because he was black.

Over the years Percy continued expanding his career as well as settling down and becoming married in 1935. After marriage he decided to invent an inexpensive hormone treatment made out of soy beans that would not only help women prevent miscarriages but also help pregnant women fight off cancers as well. Not to mention the fact that he also invented a synthetic version of what we now know as cortisone.

Basically, throughout Percy’s entire life he fought to prove that he was just as good as the white man and now we see that he was one of the most determined and head strung black scientists of them all.
