Meredith Gourdine – Black Female Inventor

As the name suggests, this eccentric individual was far more than just an inventive genius. He was the type of man that achieved greatness wherever he went, from the field of competition to the world of engineering and design, and he serves as the epitome of balance. Genius, athlete, businessman, engineer – all of these words have been used to describe Gourdine and his tremendous existence. Whichever term you see as carrying the most weight, the fact is that he is a stand out example of the power of the African American people, and is a man that deserves our attention and praise.

Gouridne first gained recognition as an athlete with incredibly natural talent. He was fortunate enough to represent Cornell University on the track, where he put in dominant performances for sprints, hurdles, and the long jump. His prowess in the latter event saw him represent the United States at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, where he narrowly lost out to earn an impressive silver medal. After the games, Gourdine’s life took a different turn, as he started to exercise his mind.

He earned himself a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering in 1953, and by 1960, he had received his Doctorate in the field from CalTech. He had also served as an officer in the United States Navy, and this maritime experience allowed him to see a niche which he could explore, namely in propulsion and ventilation systems. He then furthered his endeavours and started a laboratory where he could explore various uses of energy. Whether he was turning cheap coal into usable energy or sucking smoke out of buildings, the mind of Gourdine was clearly never at rest. His work continues today, and he is a worthy inductee into the Engineering and Science Hall of Fame. Truly, a genius.
