Lewis Temple

Lewis Temple is one of the black inventors that were born in Richmond, Virginia during the time that slavery was taking place. However, by 1829 Lewis Temple had obtained his freedom and made the choice to move to Boston where he begins a career as a blacksmith. Also, later during the same year he married Mary Clark and they had three beautiful children together. After becoming married Temple opened a whalecraft store even though he had no prior experience in this field and it turned out to be a success which allowed him to open up an even bigger store by 1845.

Being that Lewis Temple and his family were in New England they were destined for success in the whaling industry. However, even though business was going good Lewis did not stop there he continued to push harder to be able to expand his success even more. In 1848 Lewis Temple decided that it would be beneficial for him to try and design a harpoon that was more durable than the ones that were currently being used. He was able to create one that had the power to stay within the whales making the job of whaling ten times easier. Obviously, his harpoon was a big hit yet he decided not to patent it. So, this gave others the right to make slight modifications and pass it off as their own work yet Lewis Temple did not mind because his success was still expanding to the point that yet again he had to upgrade to an even bigger store.

Unfortunately, while the new shop was in the process of being built Temple fell into a whole and was injured. He sued and won yet he died a few short weeks later and was never able to collect the money that was owed to him.
