Fred Jones is considered to be one of the most important black inventors because he created quite a few diverse inventions that many people loved. Fred Jones was born in 1893 in Kentucky to a black mother and an Irish decent father whom happened to work as a railroad worker. However, Fred’s mother passed away when he was very young so he was mostly raised by his father.
When Fred turned eight years old his father decided that it would be a good idea for them to take a visit to Ohio to St. Mary’s Catholic Church. While here his father told the father of the church that he needed his son to be a part of their environment so he would have a better chance of receiving a decent education. Fred stayed around the church helping them out with basically whatever they needed. However, at the age of 12 he became enthused with automobiles and decided to run away from home to land a job working at the R.C. Crothers Garage.
Fred obtained employment there yet he had to start off as a cleanup boy. However, this did not bother him at all because it gave him the chance to watch the mechanics and pick up on some of their skills. His reading and observations definitely paid off. In fact, in the short period of three years Fred Jones was able to make his way to being the foreman of the garage. Mind you, this garage where Fred worked was the one that made racing cars. After spending so much time working on racing cars Fred then begin to want to drive them and succeeded in becoming one of the best drivers in the area.
In 1918 Fred decided to enlist in the army and he even fought World War I in France. He stayed in the army until 1919 when he was discharged. At first he had trouble finding work so he had to settle with driving physicians to their house calls. His clients adored him because when the snow was hard to maneuver through Fred came up with the bright idea of making his own snow mobile to make sure that they made it to their calls. However, Fred’s brilliance did not stop here as the years passed he invented all types of things to make both his and others lives easier. Some of his great inventions include, but are not limited to, a portable X-ray machine, motion picture devices, and even a radio transmitter. Those are not even a portion of the inventions that Fred created.
Fred Jones was an amazing black inventor. In fact, he was the first black inventor to receive the National Medal of Technology.
