Daniel McCree – Black Inventor

Many people are phobic about fire, and with good reason. Fire has the potential to destroy property as well as lives, and as long as man has used this powerful tool, the danger of losing everything has haunted us. Fire safety and prevention is a part of the modern consciousness, with children being taught from an early age that fire is dangerous, but in some cases, accidents happen. Being trapped in a burning building is extremely dangerous, and to be honest, there isn’t really that much you can do in the cas of an extreme fire. One important safety element of any building is the fire escape system, but in some cases this can me immersed in flame or simply incapable of handling the demand of desperate people trying to escape. In order to remedy the situation, Daniel McCree patented a portable fire escape in 1890.

The majority of buildings, even as far back as the 1800’s, featured collapsible stairs or ladders that were used as fire escapes, but it is easy to see the main fault of this design – fire escapes are on the extreme sides of the buildings, limiting escape routes to those who are not in the vicinity, and in large buildings, a flood of people would try and use the fire escape at the same time. McCree’s contribution in this regard is pure genius. He invented a portable fire escape that was designed to be left at properties. The device featured a cart and a rolling ladder that could be placed along the side of the building, allowing more people to escape.  Having an optional escape route could literally save lives.

While this design is now somewhat outdated, it was completely revolutionary at the time, and McCree deserves significant recognition for his role in combatting the dangers of fire.
