Ben Montgomery is one of the black inventors whose story is very sad to tell. However, he story is also very inspiration to those who experience things that are similar to the things that he has had to encounter during his life time.
Ben Montgomery was born in Virginia during the slavery time so he was born as a slave. He was sold to Joseph Davis who was not only a Mississippi planter but also the older brother of Jefferson Davis. After Ben had been with Joseph for a while Joseph so that Ben had a lot of potential and decided that he had earned the privilege to run the general store. Ben, who knew how to read and write, did not let Joseph down. In fact, he was amazing when it came to running the store. Ben’s good work paid off big time because Joseph then allowed him the opportunity to be in charge of the entire plantations ordering and shipping department.
Ben was a very talented individual. Not only could he read and write exceptionally well but he was also great when it came to inventing things. This was something else that would make Joseph proud. Ben noticed that whenever the river overflowed deliveries would be delayed for weeks so he thought of an idea that would only cause deliveries to be delayed by a few days.
Ben invented a propeller that was able to cut the water at different angles. However, since he was a slave it was not able to be patented under his name. His master, Joseph, tried to patent it under his name but was denied also since he was not the inventor of the device. In 1864 when slavery was over in Montgomery Ben tried to patent the device again under his name but he was denied yet again.
