Andrew Jackson Beard – Black Inventor

andrew jackson beardWriters have always been obsessed with the mystery and intrigue that surrounds certain scientific figures. Their minds seem to operate in a different way, and often the lives of these dynamic geniuses are full of uncertainty. The life of Andrew Jackson Beard is just such a mystery. He made numerous contributions, served as a slave, is mistakenly credited with famous inventions, owned real estate, and disappeared as quickly as he arrived on the scene. Regardless of the fact that little is known about him, several of his inventions have changed the way in which people live, and it is for this reason that he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in Ohio.

Andrew Jackson Beard – His inventions

It all began in Alabama just before the turn of the century. The middle to late 1800’s was a time of tremendous upheaval and change in the United States, and this had a direct impact on the life of Beard. After nearly 15 years as a slave on a farm, he was finally freed. His time on the farm had shown him a need for an improved plow design, and fairly rapidly he had received patents for two designs. This brought in a fair amount of money, and the shrewd Beard began buying up local property.

Beard’s next patent came for the knuckle coupler on railroad tracks, but there is a common misconception that he invented this device. The truth is that he was awarded a variant patent, which means that he modified the design. While this sounds impressive, the fact is that as many as 8000 such patents were awarded for this device alone, and this would not have brought Beard any real fame.

And just like that, the trail of Beard runs cold. Many suggest that he lived off the money he made from his property investments, quietly passing his time in rural Alabama. But regardless of what Andrew Jackson Beard did in later life, the fact is that he defied the odds, made the lives of farmers easier, and proved that real talent can never be oppressed.
