Albert Richardson

The vast majority of people have linear minds that are reliant on causal thought. What this means is that they need to understand causes and reasons before being able come up with solutions for problems. This is exemplified in arts like mathematics and science, where one solution often leads to another. However, true genius does not really operate in this manner. Many gifted inventors often say that they “see” needs and solutions. As a result, inventors often build up portfolios of seemingly random designs, but the fact is that they have simply seen things that we cannot. One such inventor is Albert Richardson, an African American genius whose work can be found in every field.

Richardson is most famous for inventing the butter churner, a device that made the creation and separation of butter much less physically demanding. What it is is a large vat with a handle that, when turned, thickens the milk to butter while separating fat and other substances. You may have seen the design on dairy farms. But he didn’t stop there. Richardson also noticed problems in some morbid places, like cemeteries.

The problem with graves in Richardson’s times was that they were too deep, and people had to get inside the grave to lower coffins without damage. Richardson created the most widely recognized piece of funeral equipment – the ropes and pulleys that lower the coffin gently to rest. This gave the dead dignity, and meant less work for cemetery employees.

Apart from these two designs, Richardson also created a highly effective pesticide – again, death featured in his work, and he also contributed to the improvement of bottle designs.

Without thinkers like Richardson, the world would undoubtedly be a less efficient and boring place. Keep an eye out for more of Albert Richardson’s work – it is far more widely spread than you would think.
